Pamela in 1 millionth NHS journey record pamela.jpg

A proud group celebrating Medical Services’ record breaking achievement (L-R) Ruby Momo, Mrs Pearson, Margarieta Lennon, Assessment Officer at Charing Cross and Shpetim Karai, one of Mrs Pearson’s regular drivers,

As usual, Pamela Pearson was picked up on Friday 27 November by Medical Services from her home in Hounslow, Middlesex as she has done three times a week for the past four years and driven the 8 miles to Charing Cross Hospital for her regular renal dialysis treatment.

But she had a pleasant surprise this time – she was the passenger in the 1 millionth NHS journey to be completed by Medical Services in 2009 - the first private provider to have achieved such a public health sector landmark in any 12 months period.

To mark the occasion 73-year-old Pamela was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Ruby Momo, the company’s station manager at the hospital.

“I have found that all the drivers are very kind and thoughtful which helps make the long drive to the hospital and back home again quite a nice outing for me” said Pamela, who has lived in Hounslow for more than 40 years.

She is one of the 250,000 patients needing renal dialysis who each year rely on Medical Services to get them safely to hospital and home again after their treatment.

“This is really a great achievement and thanks a million to all our staff, patients and clients” said Joe Sheehan, managing director, Medical Services.

Edexcel recognition for our training

Medical Services has become a recognised training centre for Edexcel, the UK's largest awarding body offering academic and vocational qualifications and testing to schools, colleges, employers and other places of learning.

“This recognition opens up a new and exciting era for our training programmes. The achievement means that we will be able to offer a larger range of nationally recognised qualifications to all functions of our business, such as customer services” said Amanda Webb, the company’s head of training.

Initially Medical Services will be delivering the BTEC Ambulance Care Assistant Award along with the BTEC First Person On Scene (FPOS) Intermediate, originally Institute of Healthcare & Development.

The Edexcel award is further recognition of Medical Service’s status as a leader in training among private providers of patient transport services to the NHS.

The Medical Services stand was one of the attractions for delegates at the PCT 'Commissioning for Quality’ annual conference and exhibition at the Hilton London Metropole hotel in London on 1 December.

There was a constant stream of visitors to the stand which illustrated the company’s patient transport and emergency courier services provided to the NHS.

The conference explored the role of commissioners in promoting and assuring high quality care for all, and considered how progress in quality improvement can be sustained as financial pressures begin to bite. Speakers included:

- Gary Belfield, Acting Director General Commissioning and System Management Directorate, Department of Health.

- Paul Corrigan, independent consultant, leadership coach and former special adviser to the Secretary of State for Health.

- Dominic Hardy, Director, Quality Framework Programme, Department of Health.
